There are some occupations that seem to sound boring but actually are exciting in so many ways. Take accountancy for example, one gets the impression that accountants are number crunchers trying to find a way to best serve their clients by helping them save money through proper tax representations to the internal revenue service and at the same time verifying legitimate expenses. But in reality, accountants do more than just that. Some accountants, for example, deal with complicated financial transactions when it comes to maritime services. Accountants are responsible for finding funding for ship builders, who by tradition, do not get paid till the turnover of a ship to the customer. This involves hundreds of millions of dollars when it comes to luxury liners. These accountants have to be resourceful in finding proper investors willing to place money into an operation which may easily take three years to build with the promise of a healthy return of investment.

Accountants also act as consultants to businesses in their expansion to other countries. Local accountants are hired or retained by bigger accounting firms to help multinational companies expand their business in other countries. They advise on the local tax and business laws of their respective countries and give suggestions on how to set up a business. This advice may also include setting up of different corporations in order to satisfy some country’s laws on foreign ownership.

Just how important is the field of accountancy? We as a society are dependent on numbers. We need to know this quantifiable information to make good decisions. These decisions affect the very outcome of our income, whether or not we are making a profit in the short or long run. And just as important as their jobs are, not doing their jobs and responsibility as well have dire consequences. Not too far back in our recent history was the trouble and turmoil that Enron created in their “creative” accounting meant to manipulate the financial reports of the company. When everything finally hit the fan, a company was shut down, multitude of jobs were dissolved, fortunes of many dissipated, and a supposedly important and global accounting firm forced to close down and dissolve. The jobs of accountants are important and vital to our society for we need their trust in reporting earnings or losses to keep public companies answerable to their share holders, whose money helps run such companies. The accountants provide for the check and balances needed to keep an economy going.
